Aluminum Cans Build Habitat For Humanity
Homes
The
Wilson Area Habitat for Humanity was awarded a $5,000 mini-grant in order to
start our Aluminum Beverage Can Recycling Program. Sixty-one affiliates across
the US applied for this mini-grant but only fifteen affiliates could be chosen.
Now that we are one of the fifteen, a bigger goal challenges us. The fifteen
affiliates will now compete for a $50,000 grant from the Aluminum Association to
be used for building Habitat homes. Additionally, the cans we collect will be
sold to a recycler and the monies used to help fund administrative costs,
building projects, and special events. Therefore, the more cans we collect and
sell to recyclers, the more monies we have available, the more homes we can
build, the more families can realize their dream of homeownership.
What do we have to do to win? That’s a good question. The affiliate with the
largest percentage increase of aluminum can collection will win the $50,000
grant. Since we are just starting the program, our beginning percentage is zero
which could turn out to be an advantage for us. But we must have your help!!
Every can counts so we need you to save every can.
How can individuals get their aluminum beverage cans to Wilson Area Habitat?
Miniature houses that have a Habitat banner on one side serve as outside
drop-off containers and are located at various sites throughout the county.
Other outside drop-off sites are now being coordinated as well. In addition to
these outside sites, we have collection containers inside several churches,
local businesses, and schools that have agreed to serve as collection sites for
their attendees, employees, students, etc.
If you would like to help set up
and/or coordinate a collection site, please contact our office at (252)
