Habitat for Humanity Selects Two Partner Homeowners
Wilson Area Habitat for Humanity is excited to announce that they have accepted two candidates for their homeownership program. Christina McMillion and Tenesha Artis. Construction will begin on Ms. McMillion’s home first, and Ms. Artis’s house will follow shortly afterward.
This is the first time the local affiliate has approved two candidates at once. Both of these women were such strong candidates that the Habitat Board of Directors voted unanimously to move forward, committing to building two houses consecutively.
Ms. McMillion and Ms. Artis both attended a Habitat Homeowner Information Meeting in August. Over 36 potential candidates were present at the orientation, and over half of the attendees submitted applications in the following weeks. The Family Selection and Support Committee then reviewed all of the qualifying applications based on need, willingness to partner with Habitat, and their ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan. Habitat offers zero-interest mortgages, offsetting costs with support from donors, local businesses, and the use of volunteers helping build the house.
Christina McMillion is the mother of two children who works at Longleaf Neuro-Medical Center. Christina’s 6-year-old son has both epilepsy and autism and needs constant supervision. Habitat will build their home to be handicap accessible and safe for both children. Tenesha Artis, who also has two children, has worked at the Wilson County Health Department for over six years.
“Both of these women are excellent examples of people who serve in our community, raise their children and have worked hard to provide for their families. Now, we will be able to help them own their own homes and provide more security for their futures. Homeownership provides the stability that has a positive impact for many years to come. I am so happy that our organization will be a part of this transformational change in their lives.” – Elisabeth Farnsworth, executive director for Wilson Area Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat for Humanity depends on the support of our community to build homes. Many local businesses have contributed goods and services to our past homes. Farnsworth hopes that she can rely on contributors to give generously again and that even more people will offer a helping hand.
